Partizan's 3-0 victory over Tobol in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League was enough to secure their place in the play-off round, while the victory in the return leg in Kazakhstan confirmed their progression – 2-1 (0-1).
For the first time in this qualifying campaign, Partizan conceded a goal after Islam Chesnokov scored with a superb volley in the seventh minute. The goal gave the home side an additional boost of confidence, while some nervousness crept into the Partizan ranks and lasted practically until the end of the first half. The Kazakh side took the initiative during that period and put Partizan under pressure, but Saša Ilić's team managed to withstand every spell of pressure and went into the break one goal down, but still two goals ahead on aggregate.
Partizan needed to raise their level after the break, and coach Ilić and his staff clearly managed to make the necessary adjustments at half-time, as the equaliser came almost immediately at the start of the second half. Just two minutes into the second period, the home side's advantage disappeared, with Stefan Mitrović reacting brilliantly following a corner and putting the ball into the net. Tobol goalkeeper Sultan Bussurmanov did manage to get his hands on the ball, but he was already well behind the goal line, meaning the score was levelled.
Not only did Partizan restore their three-goal aggregate advantage, but the events on the pitch also showed that the quality was firmly on the side of the visitors. Brazilian forward Jeh, followed by Bogdan Kostić and Ibrahim Zubairu, all had excellent opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. They failed to convert them, allowing the home side to try to punish Partizan for a lapse in concentration, but goalkeeper Miloš Krunić remained composed and prevented any further surprise. Substitute Shaka Traore then sealed another victory for the Black and Whites, giving Partizan a perfect record of four wins from four matches against teams from Kazakhstan.
Saša Ilić's side will now face a two-legged tie against Getafe CF, with the first leg scheduled for 20 August in Spain and the return leg seven days later in Humska. The winner of the tie will secure a place in the UEFA Conference League.
